Fencing is one of the most important investments you will make for your farm or ranch. Learn more about hiring a fence contractor and the variety of fencing available to horse owners. Tips on Hiring a Fence Contractor
Good fences start with proper installation. An experienced fence contractor also can help you select the best fencing materials for your land, budget and needs.

A properly constructed, professionally installed fence will last longer, look nicer and protect horses better than one that is not installed correctly. The American Fence Association (AFA) recommends ......more

PRO"S AND CON'S OF VINYL FENCE

Robert Frost said, “Good fences make good neighbors,” and he was right. But, he didn’t specify between wood fences and vinyl fences so how are people supposed to know what to go with? Basically, vinyl fencing is an outstanding option and if Frost had it to do all over again he might say that good vinyl fences make good neighbors. However, even though vinyl fences are outstanding they do have some drawbacks as well. So, the pros and cons of vinyl fencing will be discussed to give you an idea of whether vinyl fencing is for you.
Pros
One of the best features of vinyl fencing is that they look like the beautiful wood fences, at least from a difference. This gives individuals who want a fence for appearances the option to choose a vinyl fence. Plus, vinyl fences do not need to be painted ever. There is no staining required and really no maintenance at all. Once your vinyl fence is installed you simply enjoy its beauty. Vinyl fences also do not split, crack, or splinter. The Home Depot  Comparison
You see them advertise on the TV every day, orange aprons fluttering down the aisles at Home Depot, “You can do it! We can help!?”, the warm voice of Gene Hackman telling you “Lowes, let’s build something together”. These big names spend big bucks to  convince you that if you want to improve your home you need to do it up big time at their big name, big box, home improvement chain stores.

Whew, that’s a mouthful and in a lot of ways very true too. Except for vinyl fencing. Oh, they sell vinyl fencing and their prices seem to meet the big box standards but everything is not always as it seems.

Attention Vinyl Fence Buyers-Limited Color Choices Await You
February 1st, 2009 by admin

Vinyl does not come in a wide range of colors. Like that Procol Harum song Whiter Shade of Pale, it is usually limited to white, pale shades
of grey or tan. This is because the titanium oxide pigment (a component
of vinyl which prevents colors from yellowing or fading) makes it difficult
to create darker colors.

Darker colors also absorb the sun’s rays so they don’t hold up as well. Likewise vinyl is graffiti proof so you just can’t Paint it Black. Why the
pop music euphemisms? Just trying to brighten up this article because one of the few limitations of vinyl is it’s not very colorful......more

or “Why was our fence more expensive then theirs?” (If it was more). I found the best way to respond was by simply telling the truth. Sometimes our prices were more and sometimes they were less but one thing was certain. We always delivered a higher quality
product.

I have nothing against them and have even advised certain people that the H. I. C.S. might better suit their unique needs. For example, I had a guy who was flipping a property and needed the cheapest fence he could buy. He wasn’t concerned with how long the fence would last, he just wanted to sell the property. I suggested, Home Depot.

The key to big box store shopping is to know, what you are getting for the price you are paying. I highly urge you to go and look at their fencing first hand. Feel it, touch it, push it and you will see that it gives quite a bit. The panels are thinner and are generally hollow with no internal ribbing and reinforcement.

They also utilize a bracket system which is an inferior way to assemble vinyl fencing and requires external hardware which distract from the clean lines of vinyl. Their fencing usually comes pre-assembled.

Oh, I hear you out there, “Isn’t that more convenient?”

Yes, assembled sections do provide more convenience but always remember that lower quality residential grade vinyl fencing normally comes assembled, as fence panels, while prime quality commercial grade vinyl fencing always comes unassembled.

Why? To be able to ship your order more securely so you receive it, complete and undamaged. It also allows you the opportunity to personally attend to each stage of
construction, insuring the lifetime strength and durability of your fencing investment.
Keep in mind that the slide and pop assembly of commercial vinyl sections are very similar to “legos”, making them relatively easy to assemble. I, personally, am not a very handy man and I can tell you, from experience, they are not hard to put together.

One last thing to realize when evaluating prices between the H.I.C.S. and a vinyl
fence dealer. The H.I.C.S. ’s panel pricing, generally, does not include the costs of posts
and caps. This is very misleading.

They get you in on the appearance of a lower price, which is usually for the fence panel only. Then they add in these costly but essential items at the time of sale. Right when you have reached that point when you are ready to buy.

Odds are, you usually carry on with the sale and find out the hard way that the posts and caps are where these stores make their money. Which is why they sell their fencing in six foot panels (rather then eight) as this means more posts and caps. You will of course, need posts and caps to assemble a vinyl fence. So when you’re pricing various options, you’ll need to add these costs into the total. Don't forget to ad the cost of the bracket.

Wow! That great chain store price wasn’t so fabulous after all, was it?

Think about it. If you are going to make a lifetime investment in vinyl fencing for your beloved home. The rule of thumb is that, quality always trumps economy. In the long run you’ll end up paying less for a whole lot more.

A Guide to Fencing for Your Horse

those who hire a fence contractor should insist upon:

1. Product Samples: Reputable fence contractors have product samples available so consumers can see and feel the differences among materials.

2. Written Contracts: Before digging any postholes, the fence contractor and horse owner should come to a written agreement about materials and installation. The contract will specify exactly what the owner expects the fence contractor to deliver.

3. Certificates of Insurance: Fence contractors should show proof of insurance.

4. References: Horse owners should ask for and check references of the fence contractor. Ask the reference if the contractor finished the fence on time, installed it properly, stayed within the budget, etc.

Good advice is to use a fence contractor who is a member of the American Fence Association (AFA). AFA members adhere to a strict code of ethics, keep current about new products and techniques, and are backed by an Ethics and Grievance Board that will help resolve rare disputes between fence contractors and customers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition, many AFA members go one step further by becoming a Certified Fence Professional (CFP). CFPs must complete continuing education classes then pass a rigorous written exam before attaining the distinction. To remain a CFP, the contractor must retest every three years.

Selecting a Fence Type
Once you retain a fence contractor, the next choice is the type of fence to install. The top five concerns about horse fencing are:

containment
safety
budget
maintenance
aesthetics

From electric fencing to vinyl systems, flexible fence with high-tensile wire and wire mesh to traditional and plastic-coated wood enclosures, horse owners have a wide variety of style and material choices.

Electric Fencing
Electric horse fencing is a psychological and a physical barrier. Horses are trained that they will receive a shock if they touch the fence. Many horse owners turn to electric fences to prevent injuries associated with fences.

In the past when electric fence consisted of electrified bare wires, horse owners shied away from it. However, now electrified fencing is offered in PVC-coated wire, mesh and braid. Electrified mesh is made of polyethylene polymer woven with wires to contain the horses. Electric braid fencing, a relatively new product, is installed to posts and is made of braided polyester.

Vinyl
One of vinyl fencing's first applications was in the equine industry because it prevents injury to horses and requires no traditional maintenance. In addition, most vinyl fences used to enclose horses are white, which can keep horses from colliding with them at night (other colors are also available), and horses are not likely to crib on vinyl fences.

The vinyl itself is very strong, and vinyl fence construction contributes to the ultimate strength and durability of the fence. Vinyl fences are also free from traditional fence maintenance. Many vinyl fences also come with long warranties, some up to a lifetime.

Flexible Fence with High-Tensile Wire
Plastic-coated high tensile wire products continue to be popular, relatively inexpensive horse fence. From 5" rail made of three wires encased in polymer to single polymer-coated strands, to electrified coated wire, the choices for horse owners are virtually limitless. Often, horse owners choose to make the top wire of fence electrified to discourage horses from leaning on the top of the fence.

High tensile wire fencing requires little upkeep. Although it stretches if a horse steps on it, it goes right back into place. Similarly, if a tree falls on it or a car hits it, the wire might have to be restretched, but it's an easy repair. Wires are usually attached to pressure treated Southern yellow pine posts to ensure a long lasting fence, and the fence is usually between 52" and 54" tall.

Wire Mesh
Wire mesh fencing constructed of galvanized wire that is highly visible, rust resistant, and does not require much maintenance keeps horses in the paddock and keeps other animals out. The mesh openings are no larger than 2" x 4", so horses' hooves can't step through the fence, making it especially safe. The rectangular mesh has a smooth edge that protects the horses if they rub on it. The material will simply spring back if stepped on, which protects animals from injury and minimizes repairs.

Wood and Plastic-coated Wood
Wooden post and rail and split rail have always been the traditional fences of choice for horse owners. Most wood fences are painted white or black, or are stained to help protect the wood from drying out and to look attractive. While painting and staining increase the life of the fence, they also add to upkeep because the fence will need to be repainted or restained from time to time. Wood fences can be subject to rotting and damage from horses, so they require additional maintenance in exchange for their traditional good looks. Since damage is most often done by horses, owners sometimes add an electric wire above the top rail to keep the horses off the fence.

Plastic-coated wood fences combine the strength of wood and the maintenance-free benefits of vinyl. Plastic-coated wood is stronger than all-vinyl materials, the plastic coating contains splintering if the fence breaks, and horses don't chew on the plastic. These fences and gates are constructed like wood fences, making them easy to install and eliminating the need for steel reinforcements for strength. The only maintenance required is periodic washing.

Information courtesy of the American Fence Association, Inc. No matter what type of fence a horse owner chooses, proper installation and quality materials will contribute to the long life of the fence and the safety of your horses.

Attention Vinyl Fence
(continued)

Throughout the years, I have occasionally seen manufacturers come out with darker colors but they never did well and were dropped in time. I can’t tell you how many times I was asked if we carried black or green. If you come across these darker colors, be very
careful with your decision.

It is a scientific fact that dark colored vinyl fades and deteriorates faster than light
color vinyl so a more complex formula is necessary to protect and preserve them. So far,
these attempts have not succeeded.

There was an exception to this in 2004. Someone came out with what they called
“wood grain“. Originally produced in China, it looked great with real wood grains
running through it. The line started out darker but again there were too many problems,
such as warping, so they lightened up the color formula hoping to alleviate these
complications and have been fairly successful.

A couple of years later, domestic manufacturers came out with their versions.
“Wood Grain” is a beautiful alternative to wood, I love the look. If you do too, just be
aware that some are better then others. Use care before you purchase and research them
thoroughly.

When a company sells a tan, it can range from a beige (coffee with extra cream)
to almond. The almond actually looks white unless you view it up against a piece of
actual white vinyl. It’s important to understand shade differences as you may need more
fencing in the future and it can be hard to match, unless you are buying from the same
company as the original purchase.

This is a good time to examine “fading”. Commercial grade vinyl is engineered to
maintain it’s true color for a lifetime. In reality, if you have tan, grey or wood grained
fencing, over the years there will be a very slight and gradual fading. So slight and
gradual you will not even notice.

However, if you put a piece of the original tan in your closet, took it out 10 years
later and held it up to the rest of your fence you’d see a minimal fading of the color.
I will say that the public continues to demand a broader color spectrum in vinyl
fencing and due to this demand, the industry continues to experiment with it’s color
formulas.

However, until someone comes up with a darker vinyl that can stand up to the
intensity of our friendly old sun, vinyl fencing will continue to have a very limited
palette. We are all hoping, that someday, vinyl‘s “…True Colors will come shining through.”

“Buyers Remorse”.
Research before you buy.

corner and so is fence buying season. If you’re one of the millions of home owners who are seeking to provide their family the privacy and security they deserve you’re probably starting to think about purchasing a lifetime quality vinyl fence. Dollar for dollar it is the best value on the market today.

However it is one of the largest investments you’ll add onto your house. In these tight economic times you’ll want the most from your investment. So you need to make the right decisions. You need to thoroughly research such a large investment before you make it.

Hello, my name is Michael Goldman. I am also affectionately known as, the Fence Doctor. One of my customers started that. He said I knew so much about vinyl fence , I should have a degree in “fence-ology”. Well I don’t know about a degree but I have personally guided thousands of people through successful fence purchases. Of course, to learn all I know, I also had to go thru a few rough purchases to truly experience all the ins and out’s. Now, I’m hoping that you’ll take this opportunity to benefit from my years of ‘learning lessons‘.

The purpose of this report is to make sure that you’re aware of the special challenges you’ll face and the information you’ll need to gather to make a wise buying decision, when buying vinyl fence. So where does one get this information? Research. You need to know as much as you can about a product before you buy it. The more expensive the purchase the more research you need to do.

First and foremost, don’t believe everything you will hear.  I know that you’ve been google-ing “vinyl fence” hoping to get any information that will help you make that big decision. However, all you’ve been getting back are sales pitches from the countless numbers of vinyl fence companies trying to sell you their fence. They are not interested in making you an educated buyer they just want to make a sale.

You will hear many different things regarding the properties of vinyl. And believe me, you’ll hear many contradictory statements. Just bear in mind the suppliers and dealers you’ll be talking to, are all trying to sell you what they have to offer. Therefore their view of vinyl products is, in most cases, limited to what it is they are selling. You’ll run into quite a few opinions about vinyl. Just remember that is what they are, just opinions.

Most people don’t realize the simple fact, that just knowing the right questions to ask can save you 1000’s of dollars. The flipside to that coin is, not having the right information before you buy, can cause you plenty of headaches and heartaches. Take your time and research thoroughly before you buy. You need to do your due diligence to avoid a bad case of buyers remorse.

I’ve examined the process from the start to the finish and here are a few of the costly hazards that you need to investigate comprehensively, before you even start looking for a fence.

Not all Vinyl is created Equal - Did you know that there are different quality grades available and that commercial grade vinyl fence is superior to residential grade? Did you know that both virgin vinyl and recycled vinyl are readily available and that a company may be ready to sell you the recycled version and you would never know. Does it even matter?  Did you know that there are different amounts of the very important ingredients (UV inhibitors and impact modifiers) in the vinyl which protect the fence from the suns rays and allow it to stand up to the elements? The highest quality fence is readily available at the best prices if you know what to look for and especially if you know what questions to ask and what info to gather.

Size really does Matter -  Did you know that vinyl comes in varying sizes and thicknesses. One would think that the thickest is the strongest, or is it? The thickest vinyl  is typically found in PVC pipe which can be in excess of  ¼” thick. However, even thick PVC pipe (if exposed to the elements) will yellow and possibly turn brittle due to the fact that it hasn’t been blended with impact modifiers and UV Inhibitors.  Thickness is extremely important BUT it is only one factor in the quality formula that is used to create commercial grade vinyl fence.

Where to buy? Internet VS Home Improvement Chain Stores - Did you know that you can generally get a higher quality fence over the internet than from those big name home improvement stores? Why is this, what are the differences and what does one look for.  This is very important and can make the difference from having a fence that will last you a lifetime VS one that may only last 10 years. Even though the ad from the local home improvement store shows their prices are unbeatable. There are hidden costs that will surprise you! Buyer beware, this can be very misleading.

What do you do before you do anything else? - Did you know that you may need a permit and that there maybe code restrictions? I have seen these facts alone or not knowing them, cost people a lot of extra money and some real heartaches. Know how to make the proper decisions and how to get the proper information BEFORE making any buying decision.

Which company do you choose for your specific fence project? - There are so many places to buy a vinyl fence. How does one pick the RIGHT one? Would you like to have expert counseling in deciding between; the Major Manufacturers, the local fence company, internet companies, the local home improvement store? Who will provide the best product at the best price, while offering comprehensive service? This information is INVALUABLE and could save you thousand of dollars.

Which questions do you ask to make the RIGHT decision? - Do you know the answer to this? Most people don’t. Not knowing what to ask and what information to gather opens the door for big MISTAKES. How can one get the best product, at the best price, with the very best service without knowing the proper questions to ask in the first place?

Understanding the shipping and receiving process- This is the trickiest part of the whole process and where many potential problems can happen. One must know exactly what to expect and how to prepare. With a thorough understanding of the process and by knowing what to expect, most if not all problems will be alleviated and you can expect a good experience.

Have you ordered everything to insure a smooth installation? - This can save you a ton of money because if you don’t order everything you need for your unique project, you could possibly have to order more items. These additional items, along with the exorbitant costs to ship them, have wiped out many a well planned budget. You need to know exactly what to discuss with your supplier to prevent any potential miscommunication which may lead to you not having EVERYTHING you will need.

I hope that I have helped you understand some of the many things you need to research before you start your search for the perfect fence. Vinyl Fencing can be costly and confusing  but as I said earlier, dollar for dollar it is the best value on the market today. You have made a wise decision to purchase vinyl.

However, make sure that you get your moneys worth. You need to thoroughly research vinyl fence before you start calling the fence companies. Take your time and do your homework first. Seek out any and all information on the subject. Go to the library, search on the internet, there are consumer guides and references available to you such as the Better Business Bureau. Take advantage of them.

Your family deserves the best the industry has to offer just make sure you do everything you can to gather all the information you need, to make a wise decision that will benefit you all, for many years to come, with a product that will last you a lifetime. You need to be an educated consumer before you can be a satisfied buyer.

PRO"S AND CON'S
(continued)

a wonderful option for families. Finally, if your vinyl fence becomes dirty all you need to do is spray it off with a hose. The dirt and grime will be washed away from your vinyl fence and the beautiful white appearance will be restored yet again.
Cons
One of the biggest cons with vinyl fencing is the cost. Vinyl fences simply cost more than wood fences. So, if you are trying to fence a large area you can shell out some cash. But, the cost is only an initial one since you will have very little maintenance if any associated with your vinyl fence in the long run. This makes vinyl fencing cost effective, yet expensive to get started. Another con is that if you live in an area with extreme temperatures the vinyl may expand making the fence vulnerable to damage. However, if you live in a moderate climate your vinyl fence will have no problems.
You should evaluate the pros and cons of vinyl fencing before making your final decision. You may even consider checking out several different types of vinyl fencing to see which one you like better. You might like one vinyl post cap for your fence better than another so it is worth taking a look to find the best vinyl fence for you.

Natalie Aranda writes about home and gardening. However, even though vinyl fencing are outstanding they do have some drawbacks as well.

Vinyl Fencing Benefits Continued

from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), was first used as replacement material for horse fencing in the equine industry. Vinyl fencing was found to be a viable alternative to the tremendous wear and tear that horses can put on a traditional wood horse fence. Horses lean on, rub up against, and even chew on the wood fencing that Is used to enclose them. As a result, there is a high maintenance cost that goes along with the cost of building many types of fences like horse fencing that vinyl fencing doesn't have.

"Vinyl fencing is one of the more versatile materials in the fencing industry today, " says Gary Siewert, co-owner of S&S Fence, Inc.,  "The great thing about vinyl fencing is that it does a very good job of duplicating the look and feel of traditional fencing materials. A vinyl fence can be made to look just like ornamental iron fencing or wood fence, and provide a very attractive look that is going to last much longer than most traditional materials."

In fact, it turns out that you can get a vinyl fence to replace the traditional materials of wood, metal, and iron.

Looking for a white picket fence? You can get beautiful, white vinyl fencing that looks just like wood.

Ornamental iron? No problem. There is beautiful vinyl fencing that looks for all the world like traditional ornamental iron fencing—only better.

Looking for a residential redwood fence? There are several colors to choose from, and regardless of your choice, the fence will never rot, be attacked by insects, or need painting.

Vinyl fencing often comes with long term warranties,” says Siewert. “A vinyl fence has several advantages over traditional fencing materials in terms of its ability to stand up to the environment.

For the consumer this means savings in the long run because of the reduced maintenance costs and the reduced need for fence replacement. In fact, it is not unusual for a vinyl fence to look as new as the day it was installed a decade or more after it was built.”

According to Siewert, the benefits of vinyl fencing include:

Will not rot or deteriorate like wood
Impervious to damage from insects
Won't crack, split, or splinter
Smooth surface—no nails
Will not suffer damage from rain, snow, or the cold
Will never rust
Will never need painting
No paint to flake or crack
Will look new and beautiful for decades
No maintenance costs
Last longer than traditional fence materials
Long term, transferable warranties

\Though wooden fencing products may look stronger, vinyl fencing according to vinyl manufacturers, has five times the tensile strength of wood and four times the flexibility.

Siewert predicts that vinyl fencing will continue to grow in popularity as the general public becomes aware of its benefits.

“I think that many people don't realize just how much maintenance is involved in keeping a fence looking good and working properly,” he says. “Maintenance cost time and money. And even with maintenance, it is hard to keep that “like-new” look.
